Judge Hamilton was the judge in the 2006 U.S. Supreme Court case United States v. Gonzalez-Lopez who refused to permit a criminal defendant the attorney of his choice, sanctioned both his chosen counsel and replacement counsel - which sanctions were thrown out on appeal by the 8th Circuit and who eventually had to recuse herself when the case was overturned by the 8th Circuit - which result was upheld by the Supreme Court.
