I went to trial before Judge Bryan in 1997 for smuggling hashish...tons of it...and because of the USSG was sentenced to 30 years. Twelve years later I managed to get back in for resentencing and he let me go that very day. I had 14 years left to do, and that was with good time. Today, 6.5 years after my release he stopped by my business. Said he was in the area and wanted to say hi (I'm in CA, he's from WA). I don't know how he knew where I was, or why he even remembered me. He's almost 80 years old, been a Judge for 40 years, still an active Senior Federal Judge, and has had thousands of cases and defendants. I was stunned. He's a kind and compassionate man and, yes, he does know the law and respects it no matter what. His stopping by to wish me well was like he set me free once again. God Bless him.

Unreasoned opinions are prevalent in matters that relate to his former employer, which makes one wonder about cronyism.

I have never had the luck of the draw to appear before Judge Bryan while he has been on the Federal bench. I have had two cases in front of him while he was a Kitsap County Superior Court Judge - says something about my age doesn't it!! What an outstanding jurist. Does not forget his humanity; does not suffer from robitis; has a sense of humor and really follows the law. Great jurist!
