Joan M. Azrack

I'm not sure how Judge Azrack has a 8.3 rating. My experience with Judge Azrack is that once she's backed into a corner, she goes silent and avoids ruling as required by a Honorable Judges. She likes to make an example of people who no one other than family and friends have any interest in the person she's ruling on. The prosecutors weren't pushing for any time and she handed down a 2 year sentence for a case that was illegally submitted to her court. When she's made aware of this after the ruling, she goes totally silent. She refuses to rule on any motions presented to her court regarding illegalities that were committed by the prosecutors, breaking the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure and the fact that there wasn't a crime that was committed. Proof of this is the fact that if the motions later submitted to her court had no substance or foundation, she could have easily ruled on them, but the mere fact that she's issuing a ruling makes it clear that the motions are accurate in their facts.

a wonderful judge that works hard to treat every litigant thoughfully, fairly and equally. exceptionally opn-minded and patient, willling to listen and to learn. you will be treated fairly and thoughtfully before this judge every time.

Sept. 16 2022 Judge Azrack: The 12 year sentence you imposed on former Nassau County Execuive Ed Mangano was harsh, excessive, and cruel. I do not deny that this man committed crimes and deserves some punishment. But he did not kill anyone., His crimes were not violent, and he is not a danger to society. No one is hiding behind closed doors because Ed Mangano is out on the street. Your sentence serves only to solidify the feeling of many that the law, as administrated by you, is not only unfair but criminal in itself. I am not a Mangano supporter. Never voted for him or his party. But he has been done an enormous injustice, by you! I don't know how you will sleep at night knowing that this old man is behind bars, and may well be, for 12 years!!! I know of violent criminals, really violent criminals, who got less than half that time. [Redacted]

Judge Joan Azrack is a giant at time of despair. Judge Azrack is like the sunshine at the end of a 200 miles of a dark tunnel.If you get Judge Azrack you can rest assured that Justice will prevail.

JMA is smart, sharp & can’t cut thru all the BS instantly — great judge to work before — though a bit partial to the government’s cause. But I’d take a case before her every time.

Judge Joan Azrack is a fair compassionate judge who is excellent in what she does. She Lao ha a heart nd ver understanding, kudos to her.

Puzzled by the high ratings. Biggest criticism is just that she is weak, and seemingly gullible. Seems to regard certain cases as an inconvenience, and tries to force parties to settle instead of doing her job. Had a very simple case in front of her that we ultimately won, but it dragged out a needlessly long time due to her indecision, gullibility, reluctance to bring down the hammer, and lack of industriousness in deciding motions. Very disappointing experience. Did not feel like I was litigating in a federal court.

This Judge does not believe any police officer ever did anything wrong-no matter what she is shown. If you have a civil rights case, avoid her like the plague

Non-lawyer here. Permit me to comment. I ended up on the wrong side of a lawsuit. This was an intimidating experience, although I felt not responsible. This judge was intelligent, understanding, and very competent. She didn't miss anything and is inspirational. We won our case, but I hope not to visit court again.

Recently had a white-collar telemarketing fraud sentencing in front of her, where the client entered a plea to 37-46 range. She had read the papers and gave us as much time as we needed. She is new to district court having been elevated from her long-time USMJ duties. She has been honed well during her many years as a MJ and unqualifiedly appears ready and fit for battle. In the end, she gave a one-third reduction from the minimum guideline range based upon a host of extraordinary 3553(a) circumstances besetting my 69-year old client. She Understood the law and her sentencing powers. Not afraid to exercise her Article III powers, despite being relatively new to the DJ bench. Gave a similar -- but greater -- variance to a co-defendant sentenced later in the day. It's so refreshing to appear before a court that understands that the government's unbridled quest for justice (retribution) must be tempered with compassion, humanity and common sense.

Why this Judge would insist on calling a plaintiff client against the wishes of his counsel to urge a settlement is inappropriate and in my opinion inexcusable. Particularly when the Magistrate was wrong on the law. Years of effort down the drain.

She's awesome. Picked a jury in fornt of her in minutes. What a pleasure. Funny, smart, friendly.

Judge Azrack is a very fine judge. She is courteous, knowledgeable and even handed. She is willing to devote considerable time to resolve cases and achieve a just result.

Judge Azrack is a terrific magistrate judge who should have had the word magistrate removed from her title years ago by being appointed to the district court. She is smart, fair, courteous and invariably gets it right. We could use more like her on the bench.

A star, to be sure...defines what a federal judge should be...fair, sharp, evenhanded, open minded, rational, great temperament, wise beyond her mantle! Time for her to move to the district court!!

Judge Azrack is smart & balanced. She is considerate of the litigants and parties. She is focused and has a unique ability to see the big picture and help find solutions. She is practical and effective. A star!

I concur wholeheartedly with the comments below. Easily the most pleasant MJ to deal with in the ED. Courteous, pleasant, prepared and even-handed.

She is superb. Cannot understand why she has not been moved to District Court. Smart, practical, no-nonsense but also a warm, funny human being.
