Judge Laplante appears to be fair and even-handed. He is very respectful. I am impressed by his ability to ask tough questions and his genuine desire to get to the right answer in his rulings. This is a judge who takes his job seriously.
I was recently a character witness at a trial in Judge LaPlante's court. I was taken by this judge's patience, his humane treatment of everyone (defendant, witnesses, lawyers) in his courtroom, his meticulous approach to the process and his lack of ego. Judge Joseph LaPlante is, in my view, "one of the ones."
Joe LaPlante is a young , former AUSA and state Assistant AG. He is very sharp, has good common sense, and tries his best to be even handed in every type of case he handles. His youth cuts both ways. He is not burnt out, so he will stop at nothing to uncover the answers. Yet his lack of life experience sometimes leads him astray. Good man of conscience and a legal scholar. Don't be fooled by his criminal prosecution only history. His is much more flexible and astute than you'd expect.
Very hard working. Tries to do the right thing.
This is a man with the prosecutorial mindset that no police officer can do no wrong. He either doesn't know the constitution or doesn't respect it when it comes to equal protection of the law on complaints of civil and constitutional rights abuses by the government.
Approached my civil case with an obvious bias for the corporate defense. Did not even address arguments we presented, and "researched" and presented arguments for the defense that their highly paid, high powered defense did not even present, because they we off point. Threatened us and our lawyer with sanctions to get us drop the case - which kept his record of appealed rulings clear. this judge seems to care more about his record and an empty courtroom than he does about allowing the wheels of justice to turn.
